If you are caught with gambling apps on your phone or electronic device, it is likely to be confiscated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Qatar has integrated Islamic culture into its laws and tourists visiting the country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup were unable to place any bets during the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Penalty: 3 months imprisonment, \u00a3700 fine<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>8: Malaysia<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/malaysias-police-force-launches-anti-gambling-offensive-arrests-over-900\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Malaysia\u2019s Police Force<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> announced that they had arrested 905 people across the country in a two-week period for gambling crimes earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Authorities seized over \u00a3100,000, but didn\u2019t specify what type of gambling or betting was taking place. Betting is illegal in the country outside of the official lottery and a small number of horse racing tracks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thai authorities have argued that gambling runs against the principle of Buddhism, similar to many middle eastern countries and their Islamic laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Penalty: 1 year in jail, \u00a325 fine<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>6: United Arab Emirates<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the United Arab Emirates, Islam is the official religion of the country meaning gambling is prohibited and illegal in all forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dubaicityguide.com\/site\/features\/8496\/dubai-&amp;-gambling:-understanding-what-you-can-and-cannot-do#:~:text=Taking%20them%20up%20on%20this,there%20any%20casinos%20in%20Dubai%3F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Illegal gambling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> carries a maximum sentence of up to two years in prison and\/or a fine of \u00a313,000. Although offshore websites are blocked by the country\u2019s internet providers, residents are still able to access illegal gambling through proxy servers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anyone who runs an illegal gambling operation will be punished with imprisonment for a maximum period of ten years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Horse racing is illegal to bet on in the UAE with two exceptions for the Nad Al Sheba and Jebel Ali racecourses. All forms are outlawed, but illegal gambling is common throughout the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gambling on anything, whether it be poker or other card games, sports betting, horse betting and lotteries are all illegal in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2010, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/asia\/china\/6942975\/Chinas-secret-gambling-problem.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Telegraph<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reported that an estimated one trillion yuan (\u00a3117 billion) is wagered in illegal gambling every year in China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier this year, a Macau court sentenced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/asia\/china\/alvin-chau-gambling-junket-macau-conviction-b2264303.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alvin Chau to 18 years in prison<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after being found guilty of 162 charges including enabling and operating illegal gambling services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The court ordered Chau and his co-defendants to pay the government \u00a3678 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Chinese Communist government operates two different lotteries, the Welfare Lottery and the Sports Lottery but the government does not legally consider this a form of gambling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Penalty: 3 years in prison and a fine<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>3: Japan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thelawreviews.co.uk\/title\/the-gambling-law-review\/japan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most forms of gambling in Japan are illegal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, however several exceptions apply including betting on horse racing and certain motorsports. \u2018K\u014dei ky\u014dgi\u2019 are public races that can be gambled on legally: horse racing, bicycle racing, powerboat racing and asphalt speedway motorcycle racing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Illegal gamblers will face a fine of up to \u00a33,000 whilst anyone who runs or operates a gambling ring faces imprisonment with a minimum period of three months and maximum five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In October 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asgam.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/26\/japanese-authorities-declare-online-casino-gambling-a-crime-with-users-to-be-arrested\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Japan\u2019s National Police Agency issued a warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to citizens and declared the use of offshore gambling sites as a crime. In Hong Kong, the offence is punishable by up to seven years in jail and a fine of up to \u00a3500,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Penalty: Up to 7 years in jail, up to \u00a3500,000 fine<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>1: Singapore<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the Gambling Control Act 2022, anyone who is found to be involved in unlawful betting operations in Singapore shall be liable on conviction to a maximum fine of \u00a3200,000 and imprisoned for up to five years. Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to ten years and fined up to \u00a3700,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the same Act, any person who gambles with an unlawful gambling service or provider shall be liable on conviction to a maximum fine of \u00a310,000 and imprisoned for up to six months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In November 2022, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.police.gov.sg\/media-room\/news\/20221129_twelve_persons_under_inv_for_illegal_gambling_activities#:~:text=Under%20the%20Gambling%20Control%20Act,of%20up%20to%20five%20years.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Singapore Police Force<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> arrested 12 people for their suspected involvement in illegal gambling activities. Cash amounting to more than $8,250, five mobile phones and gambling-related paraphernalia were seized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As of December 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/over-800-arrested-in-singapore-for-illegal-betting-in-last-3-years\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">over 2,400 people had been arrested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Singapore for illegal gambling since 2019. Large gatherings of punters have been reported in the past year for illegal gambling on horse racing, often taking place in coffee shops and car parks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A 66-year-old cleaner was jailed for two weeks and fined \u00a320,000 for taking illegal bets on horse racing.
